| The lid of the Formicarium is designed to
fit tightly enough to prevent the escape of ants. Note that the entire top rail of the Formicarium is made from one piece of wood; the grain of the lid is therefore perfectly matched. |

| To open it
for adding ants, food, water, etc., simply lift it off by the brass
knob. The opening is as large as needed for for
these tasks. I use long wooden bamboo skewers to make starter holes for a new batch of ants, and surgical forceps to remove any unwanted material. |

| The lid is
held in place by oak dowels that fit into the opening. Gravity
holds it in place very nicely! The entire top of the Ant Habitat can be removed as illustrated below. Just take out the brass screws at each end. The glass may also then be removed for cleaning or replacement. |
